Shaun Murphy has regained his form to defeat Zhao Xintong 13-10 and advance to the World Snooker Championship semi-finals in Sheffield. Murphy’s victory continues the so-called “Crucible curse,” as Zhao becomes the 21st first-time champion unable to defend his title successfully the following year.

Shaun Murphy’s Comeback to Reach Semi-Finals

Murphy, the defending champion, turned the match around in the final session by winning four of the first five frames. This shifted the score from an 8-8 tie overnight to a 12-9 lead. Although Zhao managed to win one more frame, Murphy sealed the match with a break of 69.

Reflecting on his performance, Murphy said he knew only his best effort would be enough and was pleased to find that level in the third session. Since narrowly winning his first-round match against Fan Zhengyi 10-9, Murphy has steadily improved his play throughout the tournament.

Murphy described this win as one of the best of his career and emphasized the importance of determination and perseverance in his journey to the semi-finals.

Next Challenge: John Higgins

Murphy will face John Higgins in the semi-finals. Higgins secured his place after a 13-10 victory over Neil Robertson. Higgins, a four-time world champion, came from behind in the final session to win three consecutive frames and then produced a crucial break of 52 to close out the match.

Higgins expressed pride in reaching his 12th Crucible semi-final and highlighted the significance of continuing to compete at this level.

Other Semi-Finalists and Tournament Context

Mark Allen also advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Barry Hawkins 13-11. Allen capitalized on a critical mistake by Hawkins late in the match, which allowed him to clear the table and secure victory. Allen will face Wu Yize, who reached the semi-finals with a 13-8 win over Hossein Vafaei.

Wu, considered one of China’s rising stars, produced impressive breaks including a 135 and twelve half-centuries or better during his match. The winner of the Allen versus Wu match will reach their first Crucible final.
