A Peter Kay show in Birmingham was evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious bag, leading to a police investigation and a search of the venue. The incident occurred during the comedian’s Friday night performance at the Utilita Arena.

West Midlands Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the incident. The Utilita Arena issued a statement confirming that everyone was safely evacuated and that the venue was secure following the search.

The evacuation happened approximately 45 minutes into Peter Kay’s show. Audience member Steve Aspinall described how two men came onto the stage, and one whispered to Kay, who then quickly left the stage area. The audience was instructed to look for security personnel and listen for announcements. Aspinall noted that the atmosphere was “strange” and “eerie,” but the crowd remained calm and exited the venue without panic.

Evacuation and Response at Utilita Arena

Another attendee, Miranda Richardson, a pub landlady from Northampton, reported that staff informed the crowd about the evacuation due to “unforeseen circumstances.” She said the evacuation was handled swiftly and calmly, with staff assisting people to leave the arena quickly. According to Richardson, the decision to evacuate was made after a claim that a bag had been left unattended somewhere in the venue.

Videos shared on social media showed large crowds moving toward the exits. The Utilita Arena emphasized that the safety and security of customers and staff is their highest priority. They also stated that ticket holders would be contacted directly with further information.

Peter Kay is scheduled to perform again at the arena the following day.

Context of Increased Security Measures

The evacuation occurred shortly after the UK government raised the national terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” for the first time in over four years. This change followed a stabbing attack on two Jewish men in London’s Golders Green earlier in the week.

West Midlands Police and the Utilita Arena continue to prioritize public safety as investigations proceed.
