Australian cyclist Jay Vine has suffered a broken elbow and concussion in a serious crash during the Giro d’Italia, forcing him to abandon the race. The incident occurred during the second stage of the event, significantly impacting the UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad.
Jay Vine’s Injury and Team Impact
Jay Vine, a 30-year-old rider for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, experienced his third major crash within 13 days of racing in 2026. This latest accident resulted in a broken elbow and concussion, but fortunately, Vine will not require surgery. Despite the severity of the crash, the team expressed relief that his injuries were not more serious.
The crash happened with approximately 22 kilometers remaining in the stage when Marc Soler’s front wheel slipped on a wet right-hand turn. This caused a chain reaction, bringing down Vine and other riders as they collided with a roadside barrier.
Alongside Vine, teammates Marc Soler and Adam Yates were also forced to withdraw from the Giro due to injuries sustained in the crash. Soler suffered a pelvic fracture, while Yates experienced heavy abrasions, a laceration to his left ear, and delayed concussion symptoms. All three riders are under medical observation and will return home to continue their recovery and rehabilitation.
Team and Family Statements
Dr. Adrian Rotunno, the medical director for UAE Team Emirates, confirmed the injuries and the decision against surgery for Vine and Soler. He also noted Yates’ condition and his withdrawal from the race.
“Jay Vine suffered a concussion and an elbow fracture. Marc Soler has a pelvic fracture. At this stage, neither should require surgery,” Dr. Rotunno said. “Adam Yates suffered heavy abrasions and a laceration to his left ear… He will not take the start of stage three today.”
Vine’s wife, Bre Vine, shared her thoughts on social media, describing the crash as “really scary” but expressing gratitude that Jay’s injuries were not more severe. She highlighted the unpredictable nature of cycling accidents, noting that even careful positioning does not guarantee safety.
Race Progress and Outlook
Following the crash and the withdrawal of key riders, UAE Team Emirates continued the Giro d’Italia with a reduced lineup. The race was set to resume after a rest day, with stage four covering a 138-kilometer route from Catanzaro to Cosenza in Italy.
