Lucas Herbert Claims First LIV Golf Victory and US Open Spot
Australian golfer Lucas Herbert has secured his maiden LIV Golf League title at the LIV Golf Virginia event in Washington DC, earning a $5.5 million prize and qualification for the upcoming US Open in New York. Herbert’s victory came after a tense final round where his five-shot lead was dramatically reduced before he regained composure to finish four shots ahead of his closest competitor.
Thrilling Finish at LIV Golf Virginia
Herbert entered the final round with a strong five-shot advantage but faced intense pressure from Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia. Despite a challenging moment on the ninth hole, where Herbert made a double bogey after an overhit nine iron and multiple chip shots, he managed to maintain a narrow lead. Garcia’s birdie on the same hole cut Herbert’s lead to just two strokes.
On the back nine, the competition remained fierce. Garcia closed the gap to one stroke after a birdie on the tenth hole, but Herbert responded with a crucial 12-foot downhill putt on the eleventh, while Garcia missed his birdie opportunity. Herbert extended his lead again with a birdie on the twelfth hole, and after Garcia bogeyed the thirteenth, Herbert sealed his victory with another birdie on the fifteenth hole.
Herbert’s Performance and Career Milestones
Despite feeling unwell throughout the week and unable to complete a full practice round before the event, Herbert demonstrated resilience and skill, closing with a three-under-par 69. He finished the tournament at 24 under par over 72 holes.
This win marks Herbert’s seventh professional victory and completes his collection of wins across all four major global golf circuits: the US PGA Tour, Europe’s DP World Tour, Australasia, and now the LIV Golf League.
Herbert reflected on his performance, saying, “Probably that I can perform pretty damn well when things aren’t perfect. I was pretty sick all week and I woke up this morning probably feeling worse than I did the last few days. I had Sergio coming at me for 36 holes really hard and he pushed me the whole way, made me earn that one.”
Team Success and Future Prospects
Herbert’s victory also contributed to the success of the all-Australian Ripper GC team, which now boasts individual wins from all its members. Teammates Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, and Elvis Smylie celebrated Herbert’s triumph on the 18th green with champagne. Smith, the team captain, is a three-time LIV winner, while Leishman and Smylie have each secured their first LIV titles in recent events.
With this win, Herbert not only takes home a life-changing $5.54 million AUD but also secures a valuable entry into the US Open, setting the stage for further achievements in his golfing career.
