Strangely, some Trump administration officials have allegedly declined to respond to inquiries from certain reporters depending on the material of their email signatures. This first-time action has infuriated many and made them question government openness and press freedom.

Reports say that some reporters have faced pushback from Trump administration officials trying to get information or explanations on key topics. The authorities in issue have reportedly said that the journalists’ email signatures are what prevent them from interacting with them.

The email signatures in the issue include words or comments disparaging the Trump administration or supportive of causes conflicting with its goals. These authorities are deciding whether or not to answer journalists’ questions based on the material in their email signatures.

This worrisome trend has cast major doubt on the administration’s commitment to preserving the values of a free press and the public’s right to knowledge access. A foundation of democracy is the function of journalists in keeping government authorities responsible and guaranteeing openness in government; any efforts to suppress or control the press are very worrisome.

Media outlets press freedom campaigners, and journalists themselves have all roundly condemned the behavior of these authorities. The consequences of letting government officials cherry-pick which media they will interact with depending on their ideas or views have many worried.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) condemned in a statement the practice of discriminating against reporters depending on their email signatures, calling it a “dangerous and unacceptable precedent.” The WHCA underlined the need for a free and independent press in a democratic society and urged the government to acknowledge the function of reporters in keeping them responsible.

This most recent issue comes within an already strained Trump administration-media relationship. President Trump has called the media “the enemy of the people” several times and has tried to denigrate and question the integrity of reporters and news outlets he believes are hostile to his administration.

Some authorities’ unwillingness to interact with reporters depending on their email signatures is just the most recent in a long line of assaults on press freedom and openness. It calls into question greatly the administration’s dedication to preserving the values of a free press and the public’s need to get knowledge.

Official sources maintain their actions are defensible because they have the authority to determine their media contacts based on personal beliefs. The media’s core democratic function and a worrisome preference-setting precedent are what critics argue is compromised by this conduct.

Journalistic groups and press advocates should monitor opposition attempts to silence media outlets while the debate progresses. A functioning democracy depends on journalists’ ability to inform people and make government officials accountable, so all attempts to undermine this task require the strongest opposition.
