Doris Fisher, co-founder of Gap, has died at the age of 94. She was a pioneering force in American retail, opening the first Gap store with her husband Don in 1969. The company credited her with establishing the brand’s style and image and helping to build a retail empire that includes Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Athleta.

Doris Fisher’s Role in Founding and Growing Gap

Doris Fisher and her husband Don opened the first Gap store in San Francisco after Don struggled to find a pair of jeans that fit. Doris reportedly came up with the name “Gap,” referring to the generation gap, aiming to attract younger shoppers. While Don served as CEO and chairman, Doris was the company’s merchandiser until 2003. She played a key role in defining Gap’s style, which focused on clear, simple, and dependable clothing such as jeans, khakis, white T-shirts, and hoodies.

Gap was innovative in organizing its stores by size and style, a pioneering approach at the time. Consumer expert Kate Hardcastle noted that Fisher helped create a brand that removed doubt for customers by offering straightforward, reliable fashion choices. This approach made everyday style feel democratic and accessible.

Legacy and Impact

Gap Inc. currently operates about 3,570 stores worldwide with annual sales around $15 billion. Despite challenges in some markets, including the closure of all UK and Ireland stores in 2021, Gap remains a significant player in global retail. The company has since partnered with UK retailer Next to manage its online presence and concessions in the UK, with some standalone stores reopening recently.

Gap’s president and CEO Richard Dickson described Doris Fisher as a “full partner” in the company’s founding and a “path-breaking entrepreneur” at a time when female leadership in business was rare. He highlighted her commitment to self-expression, diversity, and inclusion, as well as her efforts to ensure Gap did more than just sell clothes.

Beyond retail, Fisher was a devoted advocate for the arts and education. At the time of her death, her net worth was estimated at $1.7 billion. The Fishers’ three sons continue to be involved in the family’s business and philanthropic activities.

Doris Fisher passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. No cause of death was specified.
