Eviction threat prompts Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary in Northamptonshire to launch a funding appeal to secure its future. The sanctuary, which is self-funded and run by volunteers, needs to raise £150,000 to buy the land it currently occupies or face the possibility of relocating.
Eviction threat prompts fundraising efforts at Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary
Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary, located in Finedon, Northamptonshire, uses the land to assess and exercise rescue dogs and to graze field animals. However, the landlord has put the site up for sale, creating uncertainty for the sanctuary’s operations. The sanctuary’s founder, Teresa Underwood, emphasized the importance of the land for the animals’ wellbeing and the sanctuary’s work.
“It would be a huge loss,” Underwood said on the sanctuary’s online appeal page. She added that if the fundraising target is not met, the team would have to find an alternative location.
Community events and ongoing challenges
To raise funds, the sanctuary is hosting a dog show and car boot sale at the Woodford community and sports club near Thrapston. The event is scheduled for 24 May and aims to generate income to help reach the £150,000 goal.
Recently, the sanctuary invested £9,000 in new fencing to improve security for the animals. Despite these efforts, the sanctuary faces ongoing challenges related to the care of the animals. Many of the rescued animals require medical treatment, neutering, and surgery, which results in high veterinary costs.
Underwood spoke about the demanding nature of running the sanctuary, saying she works seven days a week, around the clock. She noted that the sanctuary often has more animals than it can comfortably manage and that new foster homes are needed to support the rescue efforts.
The current cost of living crisis has led to an increase in pet surrenders, as rising veterinary expenses make it difficult for some owners to keep their animals. Donations and funds raised through charity events primarily go toward covering these veterinary bills, which have become increasingly expensive.
Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary continues to appeal to the public for support to secure its land and maintain its vital work in animal rescue and care.
