Comedian Joe Lycett is set to open his first major solo art exhibition titled EVERYTHING MUST GO at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in July. The exhibition will explore the theme of “things that are no longer with us.”

Exhibition Details

EVERYTHING MUST GO will feature a mixed media approach, drawing inspiration from objects within the city of Birmingham’s collection. The subjects of the artwork will include:

  • Deceased celebrities
  • Discontinued chocolate bars
  • Extinct animals
  • Destroyed buildings

The exhibition is described as being presented in Lycett’s “usual tongue-in-cheek and childlike style.” It is scheduled to open on Wednesday, 29 July, and general admission will be free.

Artist’s Vision

Lycett expressed his excitement about the exhibition, stating, “I’m honoured and delighted to be exhibiting in the superb Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, right in the centre of the best city in the world.” He aims to create a “neon graveyard” that will “overwhelm, delight and confuse gallery-goers,” featuring “colourful and silly depictions of loads of dead stuff.”

Support from Birmingham Museums Trust

Sara Wajid and Zak Mensah, co-chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, shared their enthusiasm for the project. They noted, “His unique artistic style, combined with his deep connection to Birmingham, makes this a truly special project.” They anticipate that visitors will experience something visually spectacular, thought-provoking, and full of personality.
