The maternity unit at Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset is set to reopen following a period of closure due to safety concerns. The unit, which includes maternity services and the Special Care Baby Unit, was closed in May 2025 after the Care Quality Commission raised issues regarding staffing, equipment, and the handling of serious incidents.
Addressing Safety Concerns
In response to the closure, the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has taken steps to address the highlighted concerns. This includes recruiting additional staff, merging workforces with Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, and enhancing facilities and training systems. Professor Deirdre Fowler, the chief nurse and chief midwife at the trust, expressed confidence in the measures taken to ensure patient safety upon reopening.
Fowler acknowledged the anxiety experienced by expectant parents and emphasized the importance of listening to healthcare regulators and the community. She stated, “It’s really important that we have strengthened governance and leadership and that we are able to recognise risk and respond really quickly.”
Community Reactions
Feedback from the community has been mixed. Danielle, an expectant mother, expressed her delight at the reopening, stating that she was previously unaware of the unit’s closure. She noted that the reopening would help reassure expectant parents about their safety and care quality.
On the other hand, Amanda Ford, a former NHS inspector, highlighted past issues within the unit, recalling instances of “appalling care” and a preventable baby death during her tenure with the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch from 2019 to 2020. Ford’s comments underscore the importance of the improvements made since the unit’s closure.
Efforts to Improve Services
Sally Bryant, the director of midwifery at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, reported that staff have worked diligently to enhance the service since the closure. Many staff members have transitioned from the Musgrove site to assist in the reopening, and there has been a concerted effort to strengthen leadership and align guidelines.
