Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to focus energy positively as title nears

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on his team to channel their energy positively as they approach the final stages of the Premier League title race. With Arsenal close to ending a 22-year wait for the league championship, Arteta is focused on ensuring his players remain concentrated on the task ahead, starting with their upcoming match against West Ham.

Arsenal’s title challenge and recent history

Arsenal last won the league title in 2002, during Arsène Wenger’s era, when they secured the Premier League and FA Cup double. Since then, the club has experienced a long title drought, the longest since their first league win in 1931. Under Mikel Arteta, who took over as manager in December 2019, Arsenal have won an FA Cup but have not yet secured the league crown.

After finishing as runners-up for three consecutive seasons, Arsenal now find themselves within reach of the Premier League trophy. Even if Manchester City reduces the gap to two points, Arsenal will be in a strong position to claim the title if they win against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Mikel Arteta on managing expectations and team spirit

Arteta dismissed criticism from what he called the ‘celebration police’ and emphasized the importance of focusing on the immediate challenge rather than looking too far ahead. He highlighted the positive energy and confidence within the squad following their recent success in reaching the Champions League final for the first time since 2006.

“I think we’re in a really good moment. You could sense the energy the night after the game. I see every single day, here, I know how much we want it, and those are elements that are very, very positive. I think we have to channel that energy in the right way – it’s very, very powerful. They [the players] feel confident. They are convinced, and they are really looking forward to playing on Sunday. That’s probably the best part of it.”

Arteta also noted a turning point in the team’s mindset following a defeat to Manchester City, citing a rallying cry from West Ham’s Declan Rice that inspired renewed determination. The manager praised the squad’s resilience and unity, which have helped overcome a difficult period in April marked by losses and elimination from the FA Cup.

Final steps towards the title

With the league title within reach, Arteta stressed the importance of delivering strong performances in the remaining matches. Arsenal’s final home game against Burnley and the last fixture at Crystal Palace are seen as opportunities to secure the championship.

Arteta concluded by emphasizing the team’s will to win and the need to handle the pressure of the moment:

“We go there [to West Ham] understanding the importance of the match. What is driving and really pushing the team is that incredible will to win. We have shown throughout the last three or four seasons what we are capable of in terms of performances and consistency and now it’s about delivering when the moment matters the most.”
