Premier League: De Zerbi Urges Spurs to Ignore Negativity
Roberto De Zerbi, the Tottenham Hotspur manager, has called on his players and staff to block out negative thoughts as the club fights to avoid relegation in the Premier League. Despite a challenging injury list that includes Dominic Solanke, Xavi Simons, and several others, De Zerbi remains confident in his squad’s ability to secure crucial wins.
Tottenham’s recent 1-0 victory over Wolves marked their first league win in 16 matches, but it came at the cost of injuries to key players. Solanke suffered a hamstring problem, and Simons endured a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Other absentees include goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, and Wilson Odobert.
Despite these setbacks, De Zerbi emphasized that excuses will not help the team. He highlighted the quality of the players still available, such as Randal Kolo Muani, Mathys Tel, Richarlison, Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, Palhinha, and Conor Gallagher. The manager stressed the importance of fighting on the pitch and dismissed any talk of relegation as premature.
“The most important challenge now is to silence the voice inside of us, inside the players, the staff and the fans,” De Zerbi said. “This voice can produce negative thoughts… It is all negative things. And it is rubbish.”
De Zerbi confirmed that Solanke will not play in the upcoming match against Aston Villa and is uncertain if the striker will feature again this season. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky will continue to deputize in Vicario’s absence.
Liverpool’s Challenge and Salah’s Departure
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has acknowledged that despite recent Premier League wins, the team must continue to prove their quality in the final matches of the season. Liverpool currently sit just behind Manchester United in the league standings and will face them at Old Trafford in a key fixture.
Slot emphasized that past successes do not guarantee future security for players or staff, noting the need for consistent performance. He also discussed the challenge of replacing Mohamed Salah, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Salah, Liverpool’s record goalscorer against Manchester United, has expressed peace with his decision to depart and is considering his future options.
“I feel to go through the season this is the right thing to do now, and I have peace with it,” Salah said in an interview. “I’m glad that I’m leaving now through a big door… I feel I have a lot to give: physically I feel very good.”
Slot highlighted the importance of signing a player who can complement striker Alexander Isak, who scored his first league goal for Liverpool recently but has struggled to build chemistry due to injuries. The manager also praised the improving form of Isak and Florian Wirtz as key to Liverpool’s future success.
Manchester United vs Liverpool: A Historic Rivalry
Manchester United’s interim manager Michael Carrick described the upcoming match against Liverpool as a “different ball game,” regardless of the current league positions. United currently hold third place, just ahead of Liverpool, but Carrick stressed the significance of the fixture beyond the table.
He reflected on the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs, noting the excitement and emotion the matches generate for supporters. Carrick said that winning this fixture remains one of the best feelings in football, underscoring the importance of the game despite the season’s challenges.
