Sam Konstas has been removed from Cricket Australia’s contract roster for the 2026-27 season following a period of poor performance. The 20-year-old batter, who made a notable debut against India on Boxing Day in 2024, has struggled to build on his initial promise.

Performance Review

Since his debut, Konstas has added only 103 runs across nine Test innings, resulting in an average of 16.30. His inability to capitalize on good starts and his overall performance in Sheffield Shield cricket contributed to his exclusion from the 21-man contract list announced by Cricket Australia.

In contrast, Brendan Doggett, who made his full international debut during the Ashes series, has earned his first national contract. Jake Weatherald, who played all five Tests last summer, retained his contract despite averaging just 22.33 during the series. Other players such as Michael Neser and Todd Murphy have also been awarded full contracts as Australia prepares for a busy Test schedule over the next year.

Future Prospects

George Bailey, chair of men’s national selectors, emphasized that the selectors remain interested in Konstas’s future. He noted that while Konstas has been removed from the contract list, it does not signify the end of his journey in cricket. Bailey stated, “Nothing’s really changed in terms of the fact that the man is on a journey. Is he highly talented? Yes. Is he on a journey to become a complete and better player? Yes, as all players are.”

Bailey acknowledged that there were promising signs towards the end of the season, as Konstas was consistently getting starts in his matches. He mentioned that there had been some adjustments in technique and methods, which seemed to be settling down. The selectors are looking forward to an Australia A trip to India later in the year, where Konstas is expected to have a strong chance of being included.

Konstas was one of five players to lose their contracts, along with Glenn Maxwell, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, and Matt Short. Usman Khawaja was also absent from the list following his retirement.

The contracted players for the upcoming season include notable names such as Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and Travis Head, as Australia gears up for a packed schedule that includes a two-match home series against Bangladesh, ODI tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa, and a series of Test matches against New Zealand and India.
