Stormzy’s Film Company to Co-Produce Biopic of Ian Wright

The early life of Ian Wright, the former footballer and Match of the Day pundit, is set to be explored in a new biopic co-produced by rapper Stormzy’s film company, #Merky Films. The film will focus on Wright’s journey from a challenging childhood to becoming one of Arsenal’s top scorers and a respected sports broadcaster.

Ian Wright’s Early Life and Football Career

Born in Woolwich, London, to Jamaican parents who were part of the Windrush generation, Ian Wright faced a difficult upbringing. The biopic will highlight how football became his escape from a tough home life. Wright has spoken openly about the abuse he suffered from his stepfather during his youth.

A significant figure in Wright’s early life was Sydney Pigden, a school teacher who helped him learn to read and write and encouraged him to believe in his potential. Pigden’s influence is expected to be a major part of the film’s narrative.

Wright’s path to professional football was not straightforward. He experienced multiple rejections from clubs such as Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion as a teenager. During this time, he played for an amateur Sunday league club where he was a top scorer. The film will follow Wright up to the moment when his talent is finally recognized by a professional club, forcing him to decide whether to pursue a career in football.

Stormzy’s Involvement and the Film’s Message

Stormzy described it as an “honour” for #Merky Films to co-produce the biopic, emphasizing the importance of bringing Wright’s story to the screen. He highlighted that Wright’s journey is about more than football; it is a story of resilience, family, and self-belief against the odds.

Wright himself expressed that telling his story in full feels surreal and long overdue. He hopes the film will show the complexities of life for young people and the impact of those around them, both positive and negative. While the film will include hard-hitting moments, Wright wants it ultimately to inspire hope and joy.

Ian Wright’s Career Beyond Football

After retiring from professional football in 2000, Wright has built a successful career as a broadcaster and TV personality. He has been a regular presence on the BBC’s World Cup coverage and appeared on Match of the Day until 2024. Wright has also been an advocate for women’s football and spoken out on issues such as domestic violence.

In recognition of his contributions, Wright received an OBE from Prince William in 2023. More recently, he has been involved in managing teams in the six-a-side Baller League tournament, working alongside notable figures such as Lioness Chloe Kelly and former England footballer Alan Shearer.

Details about the cast, director, and release date of the Ian Wright biopic will be announced at a later time.
