Jenny Lennick’s Hair Accessories Business Thrives

Jenny Lennick, a San Francisco-based artist and entrepreneur, has found success with her colorful hair clips, which are themed around food. Her brand, Jenny Lemons, has transitioned from a clothing line to a thriving accessories business, selling products across the US and internationally.

Transition to Hair Accessories

Originally launched in 2015 as a food-themed, hand-printed clothing line, Jenny Lemons began to pivot towards hair accessories in 2022. This shift was prompted by a chance encounter at a craft fair, where Lennick met a hair claw vendor who provided her with a contact for a factory in China. The hair clips quickly became popular, outpacing her clothing sales.

The hair clips are made from a plant-based alternative to conventional plastic and feature designs inspired by various food items. The best-selling clip is a strawberry, but options also include rainbow chard and sardine tins. Lennick describes her products as “small, affordable luxuries that add a little bit of flair and fun.”

Business Growth and Challenges

Jenny Lemons has seen significant growth, with revenue reaching $2 million last year, up from $1.7 million in 2024. The company operates with three full-time staff members and utilizes contractors for various tasks. Approximately 60% of sales come from wholesale, while the remaining 40% are generated online.

Despite the success, Lennick faces challenges, including rising costs due to tariffs on Chinese goods and competition from knockoff products. She has taken legal action against companies that replicate her patented designs and actively monitors the market for infringements.

In addition to hair clips, Lennick is exploring other food-themed products, such as hats and socks, to diversify her offerings. She aims for a 30% revenue increase this year and is in discussions with a national home-goods chain for potential wholesale opportunities.

As the business continues to evolve, Lennick remains focused on maintaining her brand identity and addressing customer values, particularly regarding sustainability and ethical production practices.
