Super foamy sneakers: what to know

Celebrity Influence and Market Trends

Floaty foam-based footwear has been embraced by various celebrities, including Aubrey Plaza in Hokas, Harry Styles in New Balance, and Zendaya, who has a partnership with On running shoes. According to Lei Takanashi, a streetwear reporter from the Business of Fashion, the trend is driven by a desire for “practical functionality.” Hoka has played a significant role in popularizing these shoes among fashion consumers by collaborating with brands like Marni and Comme des Garçons.

Lucila Saldana, a footwear strategist at WGSN, notes that the rise of “running club culture” has also contributed to the mainstream acceptance of these shoes. Saldana emphasizes that the trend’s longevity is linked to deeper behavioral shifts towards wellness and functionality.

Features and Considerations

Foot Locker’s John DiZane highlights the demand for innovative footwear, noting features such as responsive foam and carbon or nylon plates that enhance performance. Nike’s ZoomX Vaporfly 4%, released in 2017, was the first lightweight “super shoe,” designed to reduce energy loss for runners. This shoe has been associated with numerous record-breaking marathon performances.

While super-padded lifestyle sneakers often share features with performance shoes, experts caution about their stability. Eoin Doyle, an exercise physiologist, warns that high midsoles can decrease lateral stability, increasing the risk of ankle injuries. Daniel Bonanno, an associate professor in podiatry, adds that not all foamy sneakers are created equal; some have wider bases and denser foams that provide more stability.

Trampoline-like foam can alleviate pressure on the feet, benefiting individuals with specific foot pain. However, Bonanno notes that ultra-soft foam may exacerbate issues for those who pronate or supinate, potentially leading to increased stress on the feet over time.

Durability and Performance

Despite their lightweight design, Doyle points out that super foamy sneakers may not be built for longevity. He advises caution when investing in carbon-fiber plated styles, as they may only last around 500 kilometers. Research indicates that the foams in super shoes can lose their shock-absorbing capacity relatively quickly, with some studies showing a significant decline after 400 to 800 kilometers of use.

While runners have reported benefits such as reduced muscle soreness with super shoes, slower runners may experience increased pain and knee loading. DiZane suggests that carbon-plated shoes are not ideal for everyday wear, although many brands are creating more wearable options with similar foam technology.

Bonanno recommends varying footwear to avoid overloading specific body parts, especially for those with injuries. As fashion trends shift, Zendaya has recently launched a new shoe design that contrasts with bulky foamy sneakers, indicating a potential change in consumer preferences towards low-profile styles.
